"We have to step out of this charity model, and as nonprofits, we have to start being involved in the political discourse. Hunger's not about food."
- Robert Egger, anti-hunger activist, founder of D.C. Central Kitchen, and recent recipient of the Duke Zeibert Capital Achievement Award. (Source: The Washington Post)

The more I read, the more impressed I am with Greg Mortensen in Three Cups of Tea. It's about economic justice. It's about education instead of ignorance.
Good quote.
I've almost purchased that book several times. It keeps calling me and someday I will answer....thanks for the rec!
I was trying to think of another quote, this one by the archbishop? of Brazil (I think, help me on this). It went something like: "When I feed the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why are their poor, they call me a communist." I've always found this quote informing............
Oh yeah, I've seen that one. Well, I'll tell you, I don't think there's a single thing in the New Testament about "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps." All that Horatio Alger bs came about with the industrial revolution ...
Does anyone even HAVE bootstraps anymore?
What the heck ARE bootstraps and how do you pull yourself up by them? (That would make a good bumper sticker, don't you think?)
Yes, that would be good. I need a few more on my car. Really.
I, for one, have boot straps. Not only that, but they're Transylvanian boot straps. Seriously. They're attached to a pair of boots that were custom made for me by a cobbler in Transylvania. I had them made when I was still a member Narodno International Dancers. Anyway, I got them out of storage so I could look at them and figure out exactly how one would go about pulling oneself up by them. It's a mystery to me. There seems to be a very basic law of physics that prevents me from succeeding. It has something to do with the attraction between two bodies. Every time I try to pull myself up by my boot straps, I just stick to the darn planet. If I pull hard and rapidly enough, I can achieve a bit of altitude, but it doesn't last very long. It's more hopping around by my boot straps. I guess I'll have to get one of them thar rebublicans to show me how it's done.
Ed, I just knew that if anyone had bootstraps, it'd be you!
Say, where did that phrase originate, anyway? (displaying huge ignorance of bootstraps)
